Getting Sound Working Across a Dual-Monitor Setup
A dual-monitor desk can expose a confusing audio issue: each monitor connected through HDMI or DisplayPort may appear as a separate playback device, while external speakers, a headset, or a dock introduce even more choices. This guide explains how monitor audio works, how to identify the right output, and how to configure sound on Windows and macOS. That is why a dual-monitor setup may suddenly show several similarly named outputs. The solution is usually not a special dual-monitor setting: it is a matter of choosing the intended playback device, confirming the physical signal path, and using audio-routing tools only when sound truly needs to play from two places at once.
Understand what each monitor can actually do
Before changing software settings, check the hardware. Some monitors have integrated speakers, a headphone jack, or both. Others can receive audio over HDMI or DisplayPort but cannot play it; in that case, their audio device may still appear in the operating system. A headphone jack on a monitor normally passes through the digital audio arriving from the computer rather than creating better audio on its own.
Digital display connections commonly carry video and audio together:
- HDMI carries video and multichannel-capable digital audio.
- DisplayPort also carries digital audio and may expose the monitor as an output device.
- USB-C can carry audio when it is being used for DisplayPort Alt Mode or through a compatible dock.

Write down which cable connects each display and where any speakers or headset are plugged in. This prevents a common mistake: selecting “Monitor 2” when the active speakers are attached to “Monitor 1,” a docking station, or the computer itself. Names in the sound menu often come from the graphics card, monitor manufacturer, or dock, so they may not match the label on your desk.

Choose the correct audio device in Windows
Windows normally uses one default output for system sound. Click the speaker icon in the taskbar, then use the output selector beside the volume control to choose the desired monitor, speakers, headset, or dock. Play a short test clip and raise both the Windows volume and the monitor’s physical volume if applicable.
Use Sound settings for more control
- Open Settings and select System, then Sound.
- Under Output, select the device that matches the connection path you mapped.
- Open the selected device and use Test to confirm that sound reaches the intended speakers.
- Check the device volume, balance controls, and format if audio is weak, one-sided, or distorted.
- Open Volume mixer if a specific app is still using a different output.
In Volume mixer, Windows can assign an individual app to a different output device. This is useful when a conference app should use a headset while music or browser video plays through desktop speakers. Close and reopen an app after changing its output if it does not switch immediately.
Set audio output on macOS
On a Mac, displays connected over HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C may appear as output devices in Control Center and Sound settings. Open Control Center, select Sound, and choose the display, headphones, speakers, or dock you want to use. For detailed options, go to System Settings > Sound > Output.
If the display appears but produces no sound, verify that it has speakers or that speakers are plugged into its audio-out port. Also inspect the monitor’s on-screen menu for volume, mute, and audio-source controls. Some displays allow audio to be disabled independently of the Mac.
Seeing a display listed as an audio output confirms that the computer can send it an audio signal; it does not confirm that the display has speakers, that its volume is up, or that anything is connected to its headphone output.
Send the same sound to both monitors when needed
Playing the same audio through two monitors is different from merely using two displays. It can be useful in a larger workspace, but it is not always ideal. Different monitor electronics and speaker hardware process sound at different speeds, which can produce a noticeable echo when the devices are close together.
On macOS, open Audio MIDI Setup from Applications > Utilities. Create a Multi-Output Device, tick the outputs you want, choose one as the clock source, and enable drift correction for the other device when appropriate. Then select the Multi-Output Device in Sound settings. Note that system volume controls may be limited; adjust volume on the monitors or individual devices.
Windows has no equally universal built-in multi-output control for every device. Troubleshoot missing or incorrect monitor audio
Work from the simplest cause to the more technical ones. First, confirm the selected output and mute state. Next, check the cable and the monitor’s own controls. If the output device is missing, the issue is often a connection, graphics driver, dock, or display handshake problem rather than a speaker problem.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C cable securely.
- Power-cycle the monitor and, if used, the docking station.
- Try connecting the display directly to the computer to isolate a dock or adapter issue.
- Install current graphics, dock, and audio drivers from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- In Windows, use the Sound troubleshooter and check whether the device is disabled in the classic Sound control panel.
- Verify that the correct monitor input is selected, especially when multiple cables are attached.
- Test with headphones plugged into the monitor’s audio jack, if it has one, to distinguish a monitor-speaker issue from an incoming-audio issue.
A display may vanish from the output list after sleep or a cable change. Reconnecting the cable, waking the monitor before the computer, or restarting the graphics driver path can restore the device. For a persistent issue, test another certified cable and another port; high-resolution or high-refresh-rate setups can be especially sensitive to marginal cables and adapters.
Build a dependable dual-monitor audio setup
For most desks, choose one primary audio destination and keep it as the default: dedicated USB speakers, a headset, an audio interface, or speakers connected through the monitor you use most. Treat the other monitor’s audio entry as optional unless it serves a real purpose. This avoids accidental sound changes after docking, waking the computer, or switching display inputs.
If you regularly move between a laptop and desktop, label cables and keep a short note of your preferred output names. When using a dock, connect audio gear to the dock only if it has proven stable through sleep and reconnect cycles. Otherwise, a direct USB headset or speakers connected to the computer can reduce troubleshooting.
