What print quality settings actually control
Print quality usually refers to how precisely a printer places ink or toner on the page. Inkjet models may describe settings as Draft, Standard, High, or Best. Laser printers may use terms such as Economy, 600 dpi, 1,200 dpi, or Image Quality. The exact labels differ by brand and driver.
Higher-quality modes can improve fine text edges, smooth photo gradients, and solid color coverage. They also commonly print more slowly and use more ink or toner. Resolution, expressed in dots per inch (dpi), is only part of the picture. Paper coating, printhead condition, toner level, and the selected media profile can matter just as much.

Change print quality in Windows

For inkjet printers, photo paper settings typically slow the print process so ink can be placed and managed differently. Choosing Plain Paper while feeding glossy stock can lead to weak color, smudging, or poor drying. Conversely, using a glossy-paper profile on ordinary office paper may oversaturate the sheet and create soft-looking results.
Useful checks before an important print run
- Load paper that is compatible with your printer and keep it flat and dry.
- Match the driver’s paper size and type to the tray contents.

When to update the printer driver
A full manufacturer driver often exposes more quality, media, maintenance, and color controls than a basic operating-system driver. If your print dialog has no paper-type or quality choices, visit the printer manufacturer’s official support site and install the current software for your exact model. Restart the computer afterward and test the settings again.
