A power supply unit (PSU) is easy to overlook until a computer begins behaving unpredictably. It converts wall power into the regulated low-voltage rails used by the motherboard, processor, graphics card, drives, fans, and peripherals. When that regulation or delivery becomes unreliable, the results can resemble almost any other hardware fault. Random reboots, black screens during games, failed startups, and strange noises may all point to a PSU—but they should be assessed carefully before a replacement is bought.

Why PSU faults can be difficult to identify

A PC power supply does not usually provide a clear on-screen error message. Instead, the system reacts to insufficient, unstable, or interrupted power. Modern components also have their own protection behavior: a graphics card may lose video output, a motherboard may refuse to start, or the PSU itself may shut down to prevent damage.

Symptoms often appear only under load. A desktop may browse the web without trouble but turn off the moment a demanding game, rendering task, or benchmark raises CPU and GPU power demand. That pattern is important, although overheating, driver faults, and graphics-card problems can produce similar behavior.

Common signs of a failing power supply

Unexpected shutdowns and restarts

An abrupt loss of power is one of the most familiar warning signs. The screen may go black and the computer may immediately reboot, or it may remain off until the power button is pressed. If there is no blue-screen message and the event happens during high-load work, power delivery deserves attention.

Check basic causes first: confirm that the wall outlet, surge protector, and power cable are secure. Then note whether the problem occurs during games, GPU-intensive applications, or simultaneous CPU and GPU workloads. Repeated shutdowns under those conditions can indicate an overloaded, aging, defective, or poorly matched PSU.

Boot loops, no-start behavior, and intermittent startup

A computer that starts for a second, stops, and repeats the cycle may have a power issue. So may a machine that only starts after several presses of the power button or after being unplugged for a while. However, a shorted peripheral, loose motherboard power connector, failed memory module, or motherboard defect can also cause these symptoms.

Look for simple connection issues before assuming the unit has failed. The 24-pin motherboard cable and CPU EPS power cable must be fully seated. A system with a discrete graphics card may also require one or more dedicated PCIe power connectors.

Instability during gaming or other heavy workloads

A PSU problem can emerge when component demand rises rapidly. Games with high frame rates, stress tests, video exports, and AI workloads can create load changes that expose weak voltage regulation or insufficient capacity. The computer may restart, freeze, lose display output, or shut down entirely.

A wattage figure on its own does not establish PSU quality. A reputable, properly sized unit with adequate connector support and strong protections is generally a better choice than a higher-wattage model of uncertain design or condition.

Electrical smells, heat, smoke, or visible damage

A burning-plastic smell, acrid odor, smoke, sparks, discoloration near connectors, or a visibly damaged cable are urgent warning signs. Turn the PC off, switch off the PSU if it has a rear switch, and disconnect it from wall power. Do not continue testing a system with these symptoms.

Also inspect the power cable, extension lead, and surge protector. A damaged external connection can be dangerous and may be the source of the smell or heat rather than the PSU itself.

Unusual fan noise or a fan that does not behave normally

Some PSUs run their fans only after reaching a temperature or load threshold, so a stationary fan at idle is not automatically a fault. But grinding, rattling, scraping, or persistent high-speed fan behavior can suggest bearing wear, obstruction, overheating, or internal stress. Dust buildup around the PSU intake and exhaust may worsen temperatures, particularly in cases with restricted airflow.

Peripheral power problems and unexplained device dropouts

Drives that disappear, USB devices that disconnect repeatedly, fans that pulse or slow unexpectedly, and RGB lighting that resets may be related to power delivery. These symptoms are less conclusive than full shutdowns because cables, ports, drivers, hubs, and the devices themselves can fail. Still, several power-related oddities happening together are worth investigating.

  7. Reduce load temporarily by removing nonessential USB devices, returning overclocks to default settings, and testing with conservative GPU settings.
  8. Where possible, test with a known-good, compatible PSU or have a qualified technician test the system.

How to choose a replacement PSU

If replacement is the sensible outcome, choose a unit based on quality, compatibility, and realistic power needs rather than headline wattage alone. Review the graphics-card manufacturer’s recommended PSU capacity, then account for the processor, storage, cooling hardware, USB-powered devices, and future upgrades. A reasonable capacity margin can reduce noise and avoid operating constantly near the unit’s limit.

  • Use a PSU from an established manufacturer with documented protections and a meaningful warranty.
  • Confirm the physical form factor, usually ATX for standard desktop cases.
  • Verify native CPU EPS and PCIe or 12V-2x6 connector requirements for your components.
  • Use only the modular cables supplied with the exact PSU model. Modular cables are not universally interchangeable, even when plugs appear to fit.
  • Ensure the case has clear intake and exhaust paths and that the PSU fan orientation matches the case design.

When replacement is the safest decision

Replace the PSU promptly if it produces an electrical smell, smoke, visible damage, repeated protection shutdowns with a known-good configuration, or unstable behavior that disappears when another compatible unit is installed. Replacement is also often more practical than attempting to repair an older consumer PSU. Internal repair should be left to trained professionals with appropriate equipment and procedures.

Do not keep cycling power after an alarming event. A defective PSU can sometimes affect other components, and continued use may increase the risk of data loss or hardware damage. When the evidence is unclear, a methodical test with a known-good unit is more informative than guessing from software logs alone.
