An internet connection that drops every few minutes can be caused by weak Wi-Fi coverage, radio interference, a congested router, failing cables or power equipment, modem signal problems, DNS or device configuration issues, or an outage on the provider’s network. When your internet drops every few minutes, the most important question is not whether the Wi-Fi icon disappears. It is whether the failure begins inside your home network or on the connection between your modem or router and the internet provider. A structured test can prevent hours of random restarts and make it much easier to identify a weak wireless signal, a faulty cable, overloaded equipment, or an ISP line problem.
Start by defining what actually disconnects
Brief interruptions can look similar on a phone, laptop, game console, or smart TV, but they do not always have the same cause. A single device that disconnects is usually a local device, driver, or Wi-Fi issue. Every device failing at once points more strongly to the router, modem, power supply, or provider service.
Record the pattern before changing settings
For 15 to 30 minutes, write down the time of each drop, which devices are affected, and what the router lights do. Also note whether local devices can still communicate with one another. For example, if a laptop can still open the router’s administration page but cannot load a website, the Wi-Fi network may be working while the internet uplink is failing.

The fastest diagnostic is to connect a computer directly to the router with a known-good Ethernet cable. If your setup has a separate modem and router, keep the router in place for the initial test. Use a laptop with Wi-Fi turned off so traffic cannot silently switch back to wireless.

Know when the ISP should investigate
Contact your provider when wired and wireless devices drop together, the modem’s online or broadband indicator loses sync, or the problem persists after checking internal cables and restarting equipment. Ask whether there is an area outage or maintenance work. If the provider can read line diagnostics remotely, your notes may reveal intermittent signal loss that a quick test would miss.
Be ready to provide:
- The start date and approximate times of repeated outages.
- Whether a direct Ethernet test also failed.
- The exact behavior of modem and router status lights.
- Any relevant log messages or error codes.
