Get Your Laptop Touchpad Working Again

An unresponsive laptop touchpad can result from a simple accidental shortcut, a disabled operating-system setting, a corrupted driver, a conflict with an external mouse, or a physical fault. This guide explains how to narrow down the cause safely, beginning with quick checks such as restarting the computer and disconnecting peripherals. It then covers Windows and macOS settings, driver management, firmware considerations, accessibility options, and signs that professional repair is appropriate. The goal is to restore pointer control without changing settings blindly or risking data loss.

A touchpad that suddenly stops responding is frustrating, especially when it is the only pointing device available. The cause is often less serious than it appears: a keyboard shortcut may have disabled the pad, an external mouse setting may be taking priority, or the operating system may need a restart. In other cases, the problem involves a driver, a recent update, a swollen battery, or a failed internal cable. Work through the checks below in order, starting with the least invasive options.

Start with the fast, low-risk checks

Before changing drivers or opening the laptop, confirm that the problem is truly limited to the touchpad. If possible, connect a USB mouse or Bluetooth mouse so you can navigate settings more easily. You can also use the keyboard: Tab moves between controls, arrow keys change selections, Enter activates an item, and Alt + Tab switches applications on Windows.

  • Restart the laptop rather than only closing the lid.
  • Disconnect USB mice, docking stations, and wireless-mouse receivers.
  • Clean the touchpad with a dry microfiber cloth and make sure fingers are dry.
  • Check whether the pointer works on the sign-in screen or only after you sign in.
  • Try the touchpad click areas and multi-finger gestures separately; partial operation can help identify a software issue.

Many laptops include a dedicated touchpad toggle key, usually one of the function keys marked with a touchpad icon. Depending on the model, press that key alone or hold Fn while pressing it. Some HP laptops also have a small indicator area in the upper-left corner of the touchpad that can toggle the pad when double-tapped.

If the touchpad works before the operating system loads, such as in firmware setup or a built-in hardware diagnostic, the touchpad hardware is probably functional. Focus first on operating-system settings, drivers, and recently installed software.

Check touchpad settings in Windows

Windows can disable the touchpad intentionally, including when it detects an external mouse. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. Ensure the main Touchpad switch is turned on. Then expand the touchpad section and check sensitivity, tap behavior, and scrolling options.

External mouse behavior

Look for an option similar to Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected. Its wording can vary by Windows version and laptop driver. Enable it temporarily, disconnect the mouse, and test again. If your laptop uses a manufacturer utility such as Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, Dell Optimizer, or HP software, also review its input-device settings.

Accessibility settings worth reviewing

Windows accessibility features can change how clicks and pointer movement feel. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch and confirm that pointer settings are reasonable. If the pointer moves but taps fail, return to Touchpad settings and make sure tap-to-click has not been turned off.

Check trackpad settings on a Mac

On a MacBook, open the Apple menu and choose System Settings > Trackpad. Verify that tracking speed has not been moved to the lowest setting and that the expected Point & Click, Scroll & Zoom, and More Gestures options are enabled. If a USB or Bluetooth mouse is attached, disconnect it and test the built-in trackpad again.

If the trackpad does not respond at all, restart the Mac. For an Intel-based Mac, a reset of the system management controller may help with hardware-related power behavior; Apple silicon Macs handle this differently and generally benefit from a normal shutdown, a short wait, and restart. Avoid following generic reset instructions intended for another Mac model. Apple’s current support documentation is the safest source for model-specific steps.

Update or reinstall the touchpad driver

A driver issue is common after a major Windows update, an interrupted installation, or a change to chipset software. Touchpads may appear under several names in Device Manager, including Human Interface Devices, Mice and other pointing devices, or System devices. Names such as HID-compliant touch pad, I2C HID Device, Precision Touchpad, Synaptics, ELAN, or Alps are typical.

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant pointing-device and Human Interface Devices categories.
  3. Look for a device with a warning symbol, or one that is disabled.
  4. Right-click the likely touchpad entry and select Enable device if that option appears.
  5. Select Update driver, then allow Windows to search automatically.
  6. If the issue began after an update, open Properties > Driver and consider Roll Back Driver when available.
  7. Restart after any driver change and retest the touchpad.

If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, download the touchpad, chipset, and serial I/O drivers from the laptop manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model. Prefer the manufacturer package over a random third-party driver site. On many modern systems, the chipset or I2C controller driver is as important as the touchpad driver itself.

Use diagnostics and firmware settings carefully

Most major laptop manufacturers provide preboot diagnostics. Access is commonly available through a startup menu, although the key differs by brand and model. You can also enter the UEFI or BIOS setup screen during startup and look for a setting called Internal Pointing Device, Touchpad, Trackpad, or similar. It should be enabled. Do not change unrelated firmware settings. If you update BIOS or UEFI firmware, use only the official package for your exact model, keep the laptop connected to AC power, and never interrupt the process.

Know when the problem may be physical

A touchpad can fail because of liquid exposure, a damaged ribbon cable, a worn button mechanism, or pressure from internal components. Battery swelling deserves special attention: it may make the touchpad difficult to click, push the keyboard upward, separate the bottom cover, or distort the palm rest. This is a safety concern, not merely an input-device fault.

Stop troubleshooting internally and seek qualified service if you notice any of the following:

  • A bulging case, lifted touchpad, or reduced click travel.
  • Heat, unusual odor, or rapid battery drain alongside the failure.
  • Liquid was spilled on or near the laptop.
  • The touchpad is absent from firmware diagnostics and Device Manager after normal restart steps.
  • The laptop is under warranty or covered by an accidental-damage plan.

Prevent the issue from returning

Keep your operating system, chipset software, and manufacturer drivers current, but install major updates one at a time when practical so a new problem is easier to trace. Avoid unverified driver-updater utilities. Keep food, liquids, and abrasive cleaners away from the touchpad, and do not force a touchpad that feels raised or unusually hard to press. An inexpensive external mouse is also useful as an emergency navigation tool while you investigate a touchpad issue.
