What to Do When Your Laptop Refuses to Charge
A laptop that runs on AC power but will not charge its battery can have a simple cause, such as a loose cable, an underpowered USB-C charger, or a charging limit enabled in the manufacturer’s utility. It can also indicate a worn battery, damaged charging port, firmware issue, or motherboard fault. This guide explains how to identify the likely cause safely, test the power path, review Windows battery reports and charging settings, reset power management, and decide when professional service or battery replacement is appropriate.
A laptop battery that will not charge is frustrating, but the battery itself is not always the problem. A loose power connection, a damaged cable, an incompatible USB-C adapter, a charge-limit setting, or a software fault can all produce the same message: plugged in, not charging. The most useful approach is to test the charging path in order, starting with the wall outlet and adapter and ending with battery health and internal hardware.
Start by identifying the symptom
Before changing settings or buying parts, note exactly what the computer does. Does it power on only while connected to AC power? Does the charging light turn on? Is the battery percentage stuck at a particular level, or does it fall even while plugged in? These details narrow the likely cause.
- No power and no charging light: suspect the outlet, adapter, cable, charging port, or internal power circuitry.
- Runs on the adapter but battery stays at 0%: the battery may be deeply degraded, disconnected, or unable to accept a charge.
- Stops at 60%, 80%, or another fixed level: a battery preservation limit may be enabled.

A limit around 80% is often normal when that feature is enabled.
Review manufacturer power settings
Open the laptop maker’s management application and look for terms such as Battery Health, Smart Charging, Adaptive Battery Optimizer, Conservation Mode, or Charge Threshold. If the laptop must be fully charged for travel, temporarily disable the limit. Re-enable it afterward if the laptop spends most of its time connected to power.
Also reduce demand during testing. A game, video export, external displays, or a docking station can consume as much power as a small adapter supplies. Shut down demanding applications, disconnect nonessential USB devices, and leave the laptop idle for 20 minutes. If the percentage begins to increase, the charger may be marginal rather than defective.
A charging indicator confirms that the laptop detects external power; it does not prove that the adapter can deliver enough stable power to charge the battery under load.

In Device Manager, expand Batteries, right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and choose Uninstall device. Restart the computer, and Windows should reinstall it automatically. Do not download “driver updater” utilities from unverified sources.
It is also sensible to install current BIOS/UEFI, chipset, and power-management updates from the laptop manufacturer’s official support site. Keep the AC adapter connected during a firmware update and follow the vendor’s instructions exactly; interrupting a BIOS update can make the system unusable.
When the battery or hardware needs service
If a verified compatible adapter works on another laptop but not yours, or if another suitable adapter produces the same result, the fault may be in the battery, DC-in jack, USB-C power-delivery controller, charging circuit, or motherboard. A removable battery can sometimes be tested by installing a known-good compatible unit. For internal batteries, professional diagnosis is usually safer.
Battery replacement is most likely when the laptop shuts down immediately after unplugging, reports a battery error in BIOS diagnostics, has very low full-charge capacity, or remains at 0% despite a confirmed working charger. Purchase an original part or a reputable replacement made for the exact model. Avoid unknown batteries with vague compatibility claims, as poor-quality packs may have inaccurate safety circuitry.
Prevent repeat charging problems
Battery capacity naturally declines with age, but careful habits can reduce avoidable stress. Keep ventilation clear, avoid leaving the laptop in a hot car, use appropriately rated chargers, and avoid sharply bending cables near their connectors. If the laptop is normally used at a desk, a manufacturer-supported 70% to 80% charging limit may help preserve capacity over time.
