Get Better Wireless Sound by Choosing the Right Codec

Bluetooth audio codecs determine how sound is compressed, transmitted, and decoded between a phone or computer and wireless headphones, speakers, or earbuds. This guide explains what codecs such as SBC, AAC, aptX, LDAC, and LC3 do, why the active codec may differ from the one advertised, and how to change or verify codec settings on Android, Windows, and macOS. It also covers device compatibility, developer options, multipoint limitations, sound-quality trade-offs, practical troubleshooting, and safe testing steps. The goal is not simply to select the highest-bitrate option, but to choose a codec that both devices support reliably for your listening environment and use case.

Changing a Bluetooth audio codec can improve wireless listening, but it is not always a simple switch. The codec in use is negotiated by both connected devices: your phone or computer, and your headphones, earbuds, speaker, or receiver. A premium codec cannot be forced when either side does not support it, and the most ambitious setting is not necessarily the most reliable one. This guide shows how to identify the available choices, change them where the operating system permits it, and confirm that the result makes sense for everyday use.

Understand What a Bluetooth Codec Changes

A Bluetooth audio codec is the method used to encode music or other audio for wireless transmission and decode it at the receiving device. It affects bandwidth requirements, latency, resilience to radio interference, and sometimes perceived sound quality. The original source quality, headphone tuning, volume level, and fit still matter greatly, so codec changes should be treated as one part of a wider listening setup.

SBC is the baseline Bluetooth audio codec and is broadly compatible. AAC is common with Apple products. aptX variants are widely associated with Qualcomm-based devices, while LDAC is often available on Android devices and compatible Sony hardware. LC3 is part of Bluetooth LE Audio and depends on newer hardware and software support.

Check Compatibility Before You Change Anything

Read the specifications for both the transmitting device and the audio device. Do not rely only on the codec list printed on a headphone box. A phone may support a codec in theory but not expose a manual selection, and a headset may support one codec only in a particular mode.

  • Confirm the exact model and firmware version of your headphones or earbuds.
  • Check the phone, tablet, or computer manufacturer’s Bluetooth specifications.
  • Install operating-system updates and the audio device’s firmware updates.
  • Disconnect any second Bluetooth audio device while testing.
  • Turn off multipoint temporarily, if your headphones offer it.

Multipoint, microphone use, calls, gaming modes, and spatial-audio features may alter the Bluetooth connection profile. In those situations, the device can fall back to another codec or prioritize stability and two-way audio.

Change the Codec on Android

Android offers the most direct manual controls, although wording differs by manufacturer and Android version. On many phones, the codec selector is located in Developer options. These controls are intended for testing, so a selection may revert after reconnecting, rebooting, or moving out of range.

Enable Developer Options

  1. Pair your Bluetooth headphones or speaker and begin playing audio.
  2. Open Settings, then go to About phone.
  3. Find Build number and tap it seven times. Enter your screen lock code if prompted.
  4. Return to Settings and open System or Additional settings, then select Developer options.
  5. Scroll to the Bluetooth audio section and select Bluetooth Audio Codec.
  6. Choose an available option, such as AAC, aptX, or LDAC, then keep audio playing for a few seconds while the connection renegotiates.

Some Android phones show codec controls inside the connected-device details page as well. If a preferred codec is grayed out or immediately returns to SBC, the headphones, the phone, or the current feature combination does not support that choice. Do not assume this is a fault.

The active codec is a negotiated result, not a permanent preference. A setting can be visible on a phone yet remain unavailable because the receiving device or the current Bluetooth mode cannot accept it.

For LDAC, Android may also offer a playback-quality setting. A higher-quality setting can use more radio bandwidth; select a balanced or connection-priority mode if you hear dropouts on a busy train, in an office, or outdoors.

What You Can Do on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Apple devices generally manage Bluetooth codec selection automatically rather than providing a normal user-facing codec menu. With compatible Bluetooth audio products, iPhone and iPad commonly use AAC; otherwise they use a compatible fallback such as SBC. There is no standard iOS control that lets you force LDAC or aptX.

On a Mac, you can first ensure the device is connected through System Settings > Bluetooth. macOS normally chooses the suitable codec automatically. Advanced inspection tools may reveal connection details on some macOS releases, but manual overrides are not a dependable everyday workflow and may not persist. If sound is poor, focus first on firmware, reconnection, interference, and selecting the correct output device in System Settings > Sound.

Change or Verify Codec Behavior on Windows

Windows Bluetooth behavior depends heavily on the Windows version, Bluetooth adapter, driver, and headset support. Windows may negotiate a supported codec automatically, but it does not consistently provide a universal built-in codec picker. First install the latest driver supplied by the computer maker or Bluetooth adapter manufacturer, then remove and re-pair the audio device if necessary.

Open Settings > System > Sound and select the stereo playback endpoint for your headphones. Avoid choosing a hands-free or headset communications endpoint for music when possible: that mode is designed for microphone communication and usually reduces playback fidelity. In Settings > Bluetooth & devices, remove the device and pair it again after updating drivers.

Vendor utilities can sometimes expose additional options, but only use software from the computer or adapter manufacturer. Third-party “codec switcher” tools may report incomplete information or apply settings that disappear after a driver update.

Troubleshoot When the Codec Will Not Stay Selected

Start with the simplest possible setup: one source device, one paired audio device, ordinary stereo playback, and no active call. Then work through these checks.

  • Charge both devices, because low-power modes can change radio behavior.
  • Move within a few feet of the source and away from Wi-Fi routers, USB 3.0 hubs, and crowded wireless equipment.
  • Forget the pairing on both devices and create a fresh pairing.
  • Update headphone firmware through the manufacturer’s official companion app.
  • Disable multipoint, voice assistant modes, or low-latency gaming modes temporarily.
  • Test another source device to determine whether the limitation is in the phone/computer or the headphones.

Also remember that codec names alone do not guarantee a better experience. A stable AAC or SBC connection can sound preferable to a high-bitrate connection that clicks, stutters, or repeatedly drops. For video and games, latency and synchronization can matter more than maximum audio data rate.

Choose the Setting That Fits Your Listening

Use ordinary tracks you know well and compare settings at the same volume. Listen for interruptions, lip-sync accuracy, harshness at high frequencies, bass definition, and changes when you place the source in a pocket or bag. If you cannot reliably identify an improvement, choose the more stable option and leave the connection alone.

For most users, the practical order is straightforward: use the best codec both devices negotiate reliably, prioritize stability in crowded areas, and use the manufacturer’s current firmware. Manual codec selection is most valuable for diagnosing a connection or testing an Android setup, not as a mandatory tweak for every pair of wireless headphones.
