Take Control of Where Your Windows Sound Plays
Windows 10 can send sound to speakers, headphones, monitors, Bluetooth headsets, USB interfaces, and other connected hardware, but it does not always choose the right destination automatically. This guide explains how to set a default playback device through Sound settings and the classic Sound Control Panel, assign a separate default communications device, select a default microphone, and verify app-specific audio routing. It also covers common issues involving disconnected devices, Bluetooth profiles, USB audio hardware, driver conflicts, and applications that continue using an older output after a change.
Windows 10 can work with several audio devices at the same time: built-in speakers, a monitor connected through HDMI or DisplayPort, wired headphones, Bluetooth headsets, USB microphones, and professional audio interfaces. That flexibility is useful, but it can also result in sound playing through the wrong device or a meeting app using the wrong microphone. Setting clear defaults gives Windows and most applications a reliable starting point for playback, recording, and voice communications.
Understand the Audio Defaults Windows Uses
Windows 10 treats output and input as separate choices. A playback device handles sound you hear, while a recording device captures your voice or other audio. It can also maintain a separate communications default for calls, allowing regular music and system sounds to stay on speakers while call audio goes to a headset.
The modern Settings app is the fastest place to choose the device currently in use. The classic Sound Control Panel offers more detailed control, including dedicated default communications settings and device properties.

Set the Main Playback Device in Settings
Use this method when you simply want Windows sound to play through a different connected device. Make sure the desired speakers, headphones, or display are powered on and connected before beginning.
- Right-click the speaker icon in the notification area on the taskbar.
- Select Open Sound settings.
- Under Output, open the Choose your output device menu.
- Select the device you want Windows to use, such as Speakers, Headphones, or your HDMI display.
- Select Device properties if you need to confirm the device is enabled or adjust its level.
- Use the Test button, when available, to confirm that sound reaches the selected hardware.
This selection usually becomes the effective default right away. Open a browser video or play a system sound to verify it. Some applications that were already open may need to be restarted before they follow the new destination.
Use the Sound Control Panel for Full Default Control
The classic Sound Control Panel remains especially helpful when you need to separate general audio from communications audio. From Sound settings, select Sound Control Panel under Related Settings. You can also search the Start menu for “Control Panel,” then open Hardware and Sound and choose Sound.
Choose speakers or headphones as the default
On the Playback tab, right-click the desired device. Select Set as Default Device to make it the regular playback target. Select Set as Default Communication Device if you want calling apps that respect the Windows communications setting to use it for voice calls.
A green check mark identifies the default device. A phone icon may identify the default communications device. If a device does not appear, right-click an empty area and enable Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.
Choose the default microphone
Open the Recording tab and locate the microphone you intend to use. Right-click it, then choose Set as Default Device. If it will be used for calls, also choose Set as Default Communication Device. Speak into the microphone and watch for movement in the level meter to confirm Windows is receiving sound.
Changing the Windows default device does not always override an application’s own audio preference. Conferencing, recording, and gaming software may retain a manually selected headset, microphone, or interface until you change its in-app settings.
Assign Devices to Individual Applications
Windows 10 can route a particular application to a device other than the system default. This is useful if you want a music player on external speakers while a work call stays in headphones.
- Open the application you want to configure and start playing or receiving audio.
- Open Settings, then go to System and Sound.
- Select App volume and device preferences.
- Find the application in the list.
- Choose its preferred output device and, where available, input device.
- Close and reopen the application if its audio does not move immediately.
To return an app to normal behavior, set its output and input back to Default. Remember that the app may also have an internal device menu. If the two settings conflict, the app-specific setting can take precedence.
Handle Bluetooth, HDMI, and USB Audio Correctly
Different connection types create different points of confusion. Bluetooth headsets may expose separate stereo and hands-free profiles. The stereo profile generally provides better listening quality, while the hands-free profile supports microphone use but can reduce playback quality during calls. Choose the profile that matches the task, and select the headset directly inside your calling application when possible.
HDMI and DisplayPort audio are provided by the graphics hardware. When a monitor or TV is disconnected, Windows may switch away from it. If the display is connected but missing, check that its audio output is enabled in the monitor menu and that the graphics driver is functioning properly.
USB audio interfaces can present several inputs and outputs. Give Windows a moment to detect the interface after connecting it, then select the correct labeled channel in the Playback or Recording tab. For studio equipment, use the manufacturer’s current driver and choose the interface directly within audio production software when supported.
- Connect and power on the device before launching the app that needs it.
- Use a direct USB port for an audio interface when possible, rather than an unpowered hub.
- Keep the headset close to the computer and sufficiently charged when using Bluetooth.
- Disconnect unused devices if Windows repeatedly switches to an unwanted output.
- Rename devices in their properties where available to make similar entries easier to identify.
Troubleshoot a Default Device That Will Not Stick
If Windows keeps choosing the wrong destination, first open the Sound Control Panel and make sure the preferred device is enabled. Right-click it and set it as both the default device and, if appropriate, the default communications device. Disable unused outputs only if you are certain you will not need them; disabling a device is reversible, but it removes it from normal selection lists.
Next, check the volume mixer. Right-click the taskbar speaker icon and select Open Volume mixer, or use App volume and device preferences in Sound settings. An app may be muted, assigned to another output, or maintaining an earlier routing rule.
If the device is visible but produces no sound, inspect its properties in the Sound Control Panel. On the Levels tab, confirm it is not muted. On the Advanced tab, try a standard format such as 16-bit, 44,100 Hz or 16-bit, 48,000 Hz if the device and application have compatibility issues. Avoid changing sample-rate settings unnecessarily on a professional interface with a dedicated workflow.
Check Drivers and Windows Permissions
For persistent problems, open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. A warning icon can indicate a driver issue. Update Windows, then obtain drivers from the computer, motherboard, graphics card, or audio-device manufacturer as appropriate. Manufacturer drivers are often important for USB interfaces, Bluetooth adapters, and specialized headsets.
Microphone problems can also be caused by privacy controls rather than the wrong default. Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone and confirm that microphone access is enabled for the device and for the desktop or Microsoft Store application you are trying to use.
