Get Back to Clean, Unprocessed Sound

Audio enhancements such as virtual surround sound, equalizers, loudness normalization, spatial audio, bass boost, and voice processing can improve some listening situations, but they can also cause distortion, latency, muffled dialogue, unexpected volume changes, and inaccurate sound. This guide explains how to disable them quickly on Windows, Android, iPhone, and Bluetooth devices. It also shows where common settings are located, how to test whether processing is the real cause, what to do when an enhancement keeps returning, and when leaving a feature enabled may still be useful.

Audio enhancements are designed to make sound seem fuller, louder, wider, or easier to hear. Common examples include equalizers, bass boost, loudness equalization, virtual surround, spatial audio, noise suppression, Dolby processing, and headset companion-app presets. They can be useful, but they also introduce processing that may make music sound unnatural, blur speech, create a delay in games or video calls, or cause volume to shift between tracks. When audio suddenly sounds wrong, the fastest diagnostic step is usually to turn enhancements off and listen again.

What counts as an audio enhancement?

An enhancement is any software or device setting that changes the original audio signal before it reaches your headphones or speakers. Some are built into the operating system; others are supplied by an audio driver, a laptop manufacturer, a television, a soundbar, or a headphone app.

Typical features to look for include:

  • Equalizer (EQ): boosts or reduces selected frequency ranges.
  • Bass boost and dialogue enhancement: emphasize low frequencies or vocal ranges.
  • Loudness equalization or normalization: reduces perceived volume differences.
  • Spatial audio and virtual surround: simulate a larger listening space.
  • Noise suppression and echo cancellation: process microphone audio for calls.
  • Vendor effects: features labeled Dolby, DTS, Nahimic, Sonic Studio, Realtek, Waves, or similar names.

Disabling enhancements is not an admission that a device is poor quality. It is a controlled baseline test: if the problem disappears with processing off, you have isolated the cause before changing drivers or replacing hardware.

Fastest ways to disable processing by device

The exact labels differ by model, operating-system version, and installed drivers. Start with the output device you are actively using, such as USB headphones, Bluetooth earbuds, built-in speakers, or an HDMI display. Settings are often stored separately for each output.

Disable audio enhancements in Windows

Windows is the platform where hidden processing is most likely, because effects can be applied by Windows, the audio driver, and a manufacturer utility at the same time. Begin in the modern Settings app, then use the classic Sound panel if necessary.

Windows 11

  1. Right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and choose Sound settings.
  2. Under Output, select the device currently playing audio.
  3. Find Audio enhancements and set it to Off.
  4. Find Spatial sound and set it to Off if you want an unprocessed stereo signal.
  5. Play a familiar track, video, or game scene and compare the result.

If the setting is unavailable or the sound remains altered, scroll down and select More sound settings. In the Playback tab, choose your output device, select Properties, and inspect the Enhancements, Advanced, and Spatial sound tabs. Depending on the driver, you may see a checkbox such as Disable all enhancements or individual options for bass, room correction, virtual surround, and loudness equalization.

Windows 10 and manufacturer utilities

In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Sound, select the output device, and open its properties. You can also right-click the taskbar speaker icon, choose Sounds, open Playback, and then use Properties. Turn off effects in the Enhancements tab and set Spatial sound to Off.

Some laptops add a separate utility, such as Dolby Access, DTS Sound Unbound, Nahimic, Realtek Audio Console, Waves MaxxAudio, or a PC-maker control center. If changes in Windows do not help, open that utility and choose a flat profile, disable effects, or turn the audio suite off. Avoid disabling the audio driver itself; the goal is to remove processing, not lose audio output.

Turn off enhancements on Android

Android menus vary more than Windows menus. Use the Settings search field first and search for terms such as equalizer, Dolby, spatial audio, adapt sound, or sound quality. These terms usually lead to the relevant page faster than browsing categories.

On many phones, the controls appear under Settings > Sound & vibration. Samsung devices may place audio options in Sound quality and effects; other brands may use a dedicated Sound, Audio, or Dolby app. For troubleshooting, disable Dolby Atmos, UHQ upscaling, 3D audio, adaptive sound profiles, and EQ presets. If an EQ cannot be disabled, choose Normal, Flat, or reset all sliders to the center position.

Also inspect the companion app for your earbuds. A headphone app can apply a preset after the phone-level settings have been disabled. Select a neutral preset, turn off adaptive or immersive modes, and temporarily disable any personalized hearing test profile.

Switch off sound processing on iPhone and iPad

Apple devices place audio controls in several locations because music playback, accessibility features, and headphone features are separate. For music equalization, open Settings > Music > EQ and select Off. In the same Music settings area, turn Sound Check off if you do not want playback loudness normalized between songs.

For broader headphone processing, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Headphone Accommodations and turn it off for a clean comparison. When using compatible AirPods or Beats headphones, open Control Center while audio is playing, press and hold the volume control, and set Spatial Audio to Off. If you use an app with its own EQ or Dolby mode, disable that setting there as well.

Test the change and find the setting that returns

Listen with one familiar recording rather than switching among many sources. Choose a track with a clear vocal, steady bass, and cymbals or acoustic instruments; those elements make compression, excessive bass, and harsh treble easier to identify. Test at a moderate volume, since very high volume can create distortion unrelated to software processing.

If the issue disappears, enable one feature at a time only if you need it. This approach reveals the exact setting responsible. If the issue does not change, check the physical connection, try another cable or headset, disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth, and test a second application. A problem occurring in only one app is probably controlled by that app rather than by the operating system.

When effects re-enable after a restart, reconnect, or update, look for an automatic profile in the headphone app or manufacturer audio utility. You may need to save a default preset there. For Windows, updating the audio driver from the computer manufacturer’s support site can resolve settings that fail to persist, but only after you have documented the current configuration.

When you may want enhancements left on

Not every enhancement is undesirable. Spatial audio can improve immersion in supported films and games. Loudness normalization can be convenient for podcasts or playlists with inconsistent mastering. Noise suppression and echo cancellation are often valuable during calls. Accessibility adjustments can make speech substantially easier to understand.

The key is to use processing deliberately. Keep it off when you need accurate monitoring, are diagnosing distortion or delay, or prefer the sound as it was mixed. Turn on only the feature that solves a specific problem, then confirm it does not create a new one.
